Initial Access TA0001

T1078Valid Accounts×1

Adversaries may obtain and abuse credentials of existing accounts as a means of gaining Initial Access, Persistence, Privilege Escalation, or Defense Evasion. Compromised credentials may be used to bypass access controls placed on various resources on systems within the network and may even be used for persistent access to remote systems and externally available services, such as VPNs, Outlook Web Access, network devices, and remote desktop. Compromised credentials may also grant an adversary increased privilege to specific systems or access to restricted areas of the network. Adversaries may choose not to use malware or tools in conjunction with the legitimate access those credentials provide to make it harder to detect their presence.

Privilege Escalation TA0004

T1068Exploitation for Privilege Escalation×1

Adversaries may exploit software vulnerabilities in an attempt to elevate privileges. Exploitation of a software vulnerability occurs when an adversary takes advantage of a programming error in a program, service, or within the operating system software or kernel itself to execute adversary-controlled code. Security constructs such as permission levels will often hinder access to information and use of certain techniques, so adversaries will likely need to perform privilege escalation to include use of software exploitation to circumvent those restrictions.

CVE-2026-42822: improper authentication in Azure Local Disconnected Operations allows privilege escalation over the network (CVSS 10.0), fixed in ALDO 2604

Microsoft published CVE-2026-42822 on 2026-05-18: improper authentication (CWE-287) in Azure Local Disconnected Operations (ALDO) allows an unauthorized attacker to elevate privileges over a network, scored CVSS 10.0 with a scope change and rated Exploitation More Likely, though not exploited or publicly disclosed at release (MSRC, 2026-05-18). Microsoft says the most realistic scenario is a malicious or compromised insider who already has access to the internal environment and holds tenant or user identifiers, credentials or tokens; an external attacker would first need access to the internal network and valid identity context, and ALDO is designed to run disconnected and isolated (MSRC, 2026-05-18). The fix is ALDO version 2604 or later, delivered only as a full system update through the Azure portal, and ALDO is a restricted offering whose updates reach approved, allow-listed customers (MSRC, 2026-05-18).

Improper authentication in Azure Local Disconnected Operations allows an unauthorized attacker to elevate privileges over a network.

The most realistic exploitation scenario involves a malicious or compromised insider with existing access to the customer’s environment.

Updates are not available as standalone patches and must be applied as a full system update through the Azure portal.

Correctionrun 2026-10-21T1148Z-auditactionsaffected_productsbodyclassificationcvesevidenceheadlineprioritysourcessourcing_notesummarytagstechniquestitle

In practice the flaw is not a no-credentials, no-foothold remote bug: Microsoft's realistic scenario is a malicious or compromised insider with existing access and identity material, and an external attacker would first need access to the internal network and valid identity context (MSRC, 2026-05-18). The advisory does not say that cloud-managed Azure was already protected while manual stacks were not: the affected product is ALDO, and its fix is version 2604 or later, applied as a full system update through the Azure portal. No source says ALDO is common in German or Swiss federal administrations; Microsoft describes it as a restricted offering for approved customers (MSRC, 2026-05-18).
