Initial Access TA0001

T1078Valid Accounts×1

Adversaries may obtain and abuse credentials of existing accounts as a means of gaining Initial Access, Persistence, Privilege Escalation, or Defense Evasion. Compromised credentials may be used to bypass access controls placed on various resources on systems within the network and may even be used for persistent access to remote systems and externally available services, such as VPNs, Outlook Web Access, network devices, and remote desktop. Compromised credentials may also grant an adversary increased privilege to specific systems or access to restricted areas of the network. Adversaries may choose not to use malware or tools in conjunction with the legitimate access those credentials provide to make it harder to detect their presence.

Lateral Movement TA0008

T1550.004Use Alternate Authentication Material: Web Session Cookie×1

Adversaries can use stolen session cookies to authenticate to web applications and services. This technique bypasses some multi-factor authentication protocols since the session is already authenticated.

Collection TA0009

T1213Data from Information Repositories×1

Adversaries may leverage information repositories to mine valuable information. Information repositories are tools that allow for storage of information, typically to facilitate collaboration or information sharing between users, and can store a wide variety of data that may aid adversaries in further objectives, such as Credential Access, Lateral Movement, or Defense Evasion, or direct access to the target information. Adversaries may also abuse external sharing features to share sensitive documents with recipients outside of the organization (i.e., Transfer Data to Cloud Account).

CVE-2026-45691, Nextcloud Server and Enterprise Server: second-factor bypass on DAV endpoints by reusing a pre-2FA session cookie (CVSS 5.9)

Nextcloud's advisory for CVE-2026-45691 (Moderate, 5.9) says a session cookie created after successful password authentication but before TOTP completion could be reused as a Bearer token against DAV endpoints, granting read and write access while bypassing mandatory two-factor authentication (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13). The attacker therefore needs the user's password, which the advisory scores as low privileges with high attack complexity (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13). Server is affected from 32.0.0 and 33.0.0 and fixed in 32.0.9 and 33.0.3; Enterprise Server is affected from 29.0.0 through the 33 branch and fixed in 33.0.3, 32.0.9, version 31.0.14.5, version 30.0.17.9 and version 29.0.16.16 (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13). The same releases fix CVE-2026-45690, a second 2FA bypass by replaying a pending session token (Moderate, 5.9) (Nextcloud, 2026-05-15). The advisory lists no workaround, and CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue did not list either flaw as of 2026-10-21 (CISA KEV catalog, 2026-10-21). BSI's WID-SEC-2026-1517 covers CVE-2026-45543, CVE-2026-45544, CVE-2026-45545 and CVE-2026-45691 from the batch (BSI, 2026-05-13).

Nextcloud's other advisories of that week concern separate apps: an SQL injection in the column-type parameter of the Tables app (CVE-2026-45545, High 8.2) (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13), a missing JWT signature check in ID4me handling of the User OIDC app (CVE-2026-45156, High 8.1) (Nextcloud, 2026-05-12), and user identifiers leaked through the Calendar app's attendee suggestion endpoint (CVE-2026-45286, Moderate 4.3) (Nextcloud, 2026-05-12).

A pre-2FA session cookie (created after successful password authentication but before TOTP completion) could be reused as a Bearer token to authenticate against DAV endpoints, granting read/write access and bypassing mandatory two-factor authentication.

It is recommended that the Nextcloud Enterprise Server is upgraded to 33.0.3, 32.0.9, 31.0.14.5, 30.0.17.9 or 29.0.16.16

The flaw is not exploitable before authentication: the reusable session cookie is created after successful password authentication, so an attacker needs the user's password (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13). Server is affected from 32.0.0 before 32.0.9 and from 33.0.0 before 33.0.3 (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13). CVE-2026-45690 is a second 2FA bypass fixed in the same releases (Moderate 5.9) (Nextcloud, 2026-05-15), not an SQL injection; the column-type SQL injection is CVE-2026-45545 in the Tables app, rated High 8.2 (Nextcloud, 2026-05-13), the User OIDC JWT signature bypass is rated High 8.1 (Nextcloud, 2026-05-12), and the Calendar attendee-suggestion leak is Moderate 4.3 (Nextcloud, 2026-05-12).

No cited source describes how widely Nextcloud is deployed in EU government or education, or states a public proof of concept or exploitation; with the password prerequisite, a Moderate score and no reported exploitation, the fix belongs in the regular patch cycle.
